The Muir Woods Cafe is a welcome sight after a strenuous hike on the trails around Muir Woods National Monument, with a nice assortment of meals and beverages. They have kids' meals and senior discounts.
Actually, it looks pretty good to me the minute I get off the Muir Woods Shuttle!
The cafe features a menu and preparation methods focused on sustainability and local ingredients, as well as making a minimal impact on the redwood forest. Their "Easy as 1-2-3" trash sorting and disposal system recycles and composts nearly 90% of the restaurant's waste.
Food choices include local organic breads, cheeses, and pastries, which are also used in the salads and sandwiches. Fruits and vegetables come from local farms, which is practical even high on the mountain since West Marin County is a largely rural area.
They also have great soups, locally made hot dogs, and specials. A certain contributing editor of this website who is a former Muir Woods employee has been known to over-indulge on said specials. But I digress.
The menu includes choices for Vegans, Vegetarians, Low-fat and Low-sodium diets and Diabetic diets. As noted at the top of the page, if you have special needs (or a group) you can call ahead to the cafe to ensure they have what you're looking for.
The cafe typically closes about a half hour before the park's closing time.
