You can have your wedding at Muir Woods National Monument, but we believe it's a good choice only if you're having a small ceremony and you're looking for something simple and close to nature. There are a number of restrictions on weddings in the park, and everything spectacular has to come from Mother Nature rather than big speakers and installations.
Here are the restrictions, which are intended to keep the scope, style and noise levels from events on the small side:
-- Maximum size is 30 people
-- No weekend or holiday weddings from March 15 through October 15, when crowds are the largest. Weekdays during this period are OK.
-- Ceremonies must be before 10:00 AM or after 4:30 PM, again to avoid the crowds.
-- No space for receptions (see below for link to a reception site nearby on the mountain)
-- No chairs -- everyone will have to stand. (Check with the Park if you have guests who are disabled.)
-- No lectern, music or singing, so the soundtrack will be the sound of the wind in the trees and the birds in the forest. OK, and maybe a bus in the parking lot, too.
If this sounds like the wedding site you're after, call the Special Park Uses Group for details at 415-561-4300 and they'll be able to answer all your questions. Don't hesitate to ask about things you'd like to include -- they're nice people and there may be a twist they suggest that makes your wedding extra special.
Another nearby option is the Muir Woods Park Community Association clubhouse, which can handle a reception with up to 75 people, and the beautiful Mountain Home Inn is also close by.
Some examples of wedding photos and engagement photos taken at Muir Woods are here, and here and here, and this set features Muir Beach and Muir Woods.
The National Park Service list of GGNRA Wedding Sites lists many additional choices in the area, and nearby Sausalito also has many great options that have fewer restrictions than National Parks.
